Most Catches in IPL | The Safest Pair of Hands

Most catches in IPL (Indian Premier League) list have the names of the best fielders in the ten-team T20 league. Suresh Raina, Kieron Pollard, AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, etc., have the safest hands.

Most Catches in IPL – The Mr. IPL

With 109 catches, former Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina has taken the most catches in IPL. Be at the slips or backward point, Raina very rarely messes up the catching opportunities. The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer, who has also played for Gujarat Lions, is the first player to reach the three-figure mark in catches.

Raina, who skipped IPL 2020 citing personal reasons, reached double-digits in catches in six of the 13 IPL seasons. In an interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Jonty Rhodes, regarded as the greatest fielder of all time, rated Raina as the no 1 fielder in world cricket in 2019. The 36-year-old has taken over 150 catches across all three formats in international cricket.

Most catches in IPL History – A Unique Record

Former Mumbai Indians player Kieron Pollard is only the second player in IPL history to reach 100 in this category. He achieved this feat in the 2022 edition, his final season in the IPL. Pollard has 103 catches to his name in IPL and is the only player to complete the century mark in catches for a single franchise. As he is retired now, he doesn’t have a chance to hold the record for the Most catches in IPL.

Rohit, Kohli, Dhawan | The Catching Trio

Among the active cricketers in IPL, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shikhar Dhawan are a few catches away from reaching the three-figure mark. Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is third on the list with 97 catches, while Kohli and Dhawan are fifth with 93 and 92, respectively.

Kohli is seven catches away from joining Kieron Pollard as the second cricketer to reach 100 for a single franchise. Meanwhile, Rohit, Dhawan, and Ravindra Jadeja have played for more than one team in the IPL.

Most Catches in IPL – Single Season & Innings

AB de Villiers, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore player, finished second in the Orange Cap race behind Virat Kohli with 687 runs in the IPL 2016 season. However, he came up with another impressive feat in the same edition. De Villiers created an IPL record by snapping 19 catches in 16 matches. It is the highest-ever tally in a single IPL campaign.

The Mr. 360 has taken the highest number of catches in the T20 World Cup – 23 in 25 innings.

Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi rewrote IPL record books during match 55 of the IPL 2021 season. He became the first player to take five catches in an IPL match. Rohit Sharma, Jimmy Neesham, Krunal Pandya, Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Suryakumar Yadav were all dismissed caught by Nabi.

By Wicket-keepers

Unsurprisingly, MS Dhoni – the best wicketkeeper in IPL – has taken the most catches in ipl by a wicketkeeper. The ‘Thala’ has completed 131, six more than second-placed Dinesh Karthik’s tally. Wriddhiman Saha, who plies his trade with Gujarat Titans, is third in the chart with 73. Robin Uthappa and Parthiv Patel are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Stats for 2022

The IPL 2002 edition saw an uncapped player topping the catches chart for the first time in the tournament’s history. Rajasthan Royals batsman Riyan Parag took 17, which was also the highest tally by an Indian fielder in an IPL season.

Mayank Agarwal, Kane Williamson, Shikhar Dhawan, Rovman Powell, and Tilak Varma finished joint second with ten catches each. Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul and Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rinku Singh took a very few in the 15th season.

Chennai Super Kings, meanwhile, was amongst the most catches dropped by a team in the 15th edition. The franchise, which boasts some top fielders in their ranks, had a disappointing season. The dropped catches had a huge impact on their campaign.
